Susan Rhein, Bears Superfan

Marcus,

Thank you for the fun opportunity to voice our opinions as Fans on NBC's website however, the season isn't over yet. I missed the Probowl Game due to cleaning out my Mom's house so I can't blog about how the Bears players played but, we still have the Chicago Bears Fan Convention which is coming up at the end of March, 30, 31 and April 1st and then the Draft Day Party at Soldier Field which is usually towards the end of April and then if you have an opportunity to join the Bears at any of their charity events and/or autograph signings, you can still write about those experiences too and then low and behold come the end of July, we start with Training Camp in Bourbonnais. So you see Marcus, writing about the Chicago Bears from a Fan's perspective is never over.

By the way, I have to congratulate you and the Indianapolis Colts on a fantastic Superbowl Win. I must admit that the Chicago Bears looked very promising in the first half of the game, but then they just lost their rhythm and that cost them the game. However since they had a taste of what it is like to be in the winners circle I have no doubt that the Chicago Bears will be back again next season and the Bears "will be who we thought they were and, they will be crowned" as the
Superbowl Champs of XLII.

GO BEARS.

I'm sorry. I didn't realize that all of the women (except for Eileen's sisters) were SuperFan Bloggers. I'm so used to just reading your first names that the last names didn't register with me. Congratulations to all of our SuperLadyFans for getting ink (and I don't mean tattoos - that's Glenn's gig)! :)

I also had a great time blogging with you folks. Some of us got the bye-week blahs and didn't post every week (me) and some posted nearly every day (Kenneth) and some posted in-between, but in all, we had fun. So, Marcus, how did we do? Was your experiment a success?

Let's dance again next year!

I just read a little of Kenneth's blog. Tank was not charged with possession. He has a misdemeanor charge for not having the license for his firearms. He is not getting preferential treatment. If anything he has been given excessive punishment for this. If this was Marcus he would not be on house arrest.

At this point I haven't read everything my fellow bloggers have written because you must admit, Kenneth and Paul have written essays. I promise to get to them. To answer Kenneth, I don't think you will have to wait 21 more years for a Super Bowl win from the Bears. And how come none of my fellow bloggers noticed me in the Sun Times article, too?

I probably can't add too much to what has already been said. The first quarter was so exciting, starting with Devin. He was unbelievable. It's fun to see him watching himself on the screen as he's running in. I was practically hyperventilating the entire quarter. My friend that's in from Baltimore was really having the pre-game jitters. From early Sunday morning until kick-off he was throwing up. And you may think this loss is difficult for Bears fans....but think of how people from Baltimore feel about the Colts winning.

We went to Halas Hall yesterday and saw some of the players and families return. Except for the media we were the only fans there. We waved and applauded, and they all waved back.

It was a great season, and as bad as we feel over the loss, the players feel worse. It's also a bittersweet end to the season because now you can pretty much guess who won't be back next season (RE-SIGN LANCE!!)

It was fun doing the Superfan Blog with all of you. And, thanks, fellows, for winning the NFC Championship and going to the Super Bowl!

GO BEARS!

It's finally sinking in...

Kenneth Sothman, Bears Superfan

I woke up today like any other day. It was a good feeling to realize the world wasn't coming to an end once Peyton Manning won a Superbowl.

My usual normal morning routine involves catching the previous night's Sportscenter which I usually watch two times through (but refused last night), but in fear of starting the day on a bad note, I opted with some VH1. And as Regina Spektor told me:

"All my friends say that, of course, it's gonna get better gonna get better better better better better better better better better better..."

But the day continued on as normal. Classes were still classes, the cute girl in my theatre class is still cute (she was rooting for the Bears), and I still can't quite understand Spanish. I figured if something odd like a Chicago team was going to lose in a championship, then the universe could at least align correctly so I could understand mi profesora.

Seriously though, how is that possible? The Bulls won six of them, the Fire won a championship, and even my White Sox won a World Series. How could the Bears not continue the trend? As worse yet, what if I have to wait another 21 years for this?

I won't have to wait that long, right Paul? Or Gail? Or Kathee? They should be back sometime in the next few years...

But all in all, I'm making it by alright. A few random notes:

- I mentioned in an earlier post how I watched my White Sox dvd last night, which to keep in the mood of baseball and mind off football, I opted to watch Field of Dreams, which was due at the video store here last night. Ironically by opting to attempt to lighten my spirits, the move to not take it back made matters worse, for I forgot to move my car from a parking lot here to where I'm assigned to park. So what I'm basically saying is that it would be very generous of the Chicago Bears to give me 25 dollars for my parking ticket.

- How did Paul and I not spot that Devin Hester's kick-off return was a complete replica of Teddy Ginn's kick-off return against Florida, thus leading the doom of our Bears?

- Should I at least be happy that the game didn't end on a Vinataeri field goal? On that note...

- Was it as depressing for anyone else to look at the scoreboard in the second half and think to themselves, "Well, we're technically still in the game, yet we've done nothing the whole time to show we can come back or stop them."

- I couldn't help but smile at Marcus's picture, which is the classy way of rubbing it in, yet burns just as deep. To steal from Paul, "I hope you are satisfied."

- The low point of the night came when my good friend Katie, also known as the "Bears Gal", called me on the phone to check up on me well after the game. We talked for a little bit, about the game, about the season, and about how walking around campus is going to be rough, especially when the Superbowl Champs stuff starts coming out mid-week.

Then she mentioned "Well I already know some Colts fans who are planning on going to the parade." At that point I could feel both of our hearts burst, for we were planning to skip classes for a day to attend OUR championship parade.

- All in all, I have to be a good sport, so congratulations to the 2007 World Champions, your Indianapolis Colts. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go walk around campus blind-folded with my Ipod on full blast.

I really do feel bad for all the crap you're going to have to go through with all those Hoosiers this week, and, well, probably for the next semester. Like you, I wish the Bears would have pulled it out, but it appears that between Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith, the Learner hasn't yet become the Master.

Wow. This is really a very low moment in my sports life.

I just wanted Rex to have a good game. That's all I would've ever asked for. So painful to watch...

I can't really organize thoughts right now. I'm going to go watch my Chicago White Sox World Series DVD for awhile...

I think there was supposed to be a game tonight

Paul Bixby
Paul Bixby , Bears Super Fan

I'm not sure I understand this. There is a Bears team in the SuperBowl and they didn't win. I don't know that I can handle this. This season came together so well. They accomplished so much.

For our quarterback to be defeated by the weather and the Dome Team QB to take it in stride, it seems inconceivable.

In a game where Devin Hester draws first blood on the first kickoff, the Bears collapse and lose. What happened to our defense? How did Peyton Manning stand on his feet the whole night, bar one play? How did an AFC offensive line stand up an NFC defensive line?

I have never seen our entire team outclassed like they were tonight. Losing Ced was a bigger blow than I expected it to be. I have never seen Rex and Olin misconnect so many times. How does the team accustomed to playing in the snow let the ball slip so much?

There is equal blame to be laid upon the offense and defense. Our Defense let the Colts keep the ball far too long, far too often. The Offense did Jack and Sh** when they finally got the ball. Turning 2nd and 1 into 3rd and 12 is unforgivable. We looked like a high school team out there. The fact that the defense kept them to ONLY 28 points is a surprise.

I suppose we have "next year," but for that to happen Rex needs to learn to make the plays in the clutch. Awful. Just plain awful.

Well, Marcus, I hope you are satisfied. I hope you are satisfied.

Quick first half thoughts:

- Way too many turnovers on both sides. Sure, it's a close game, but it's a very ugly game.

- Benson is definitely a stomach punch. And since he's officially out for the game, there's no hope of a Willis Reed like comeback...

- Addai is tearing us up, and even if it doesn't quite show, Manning has torn us up too. This second half could make me sick.

- It's an awful idea to have Grossman manage the game early, because do we really want him gun-slinging the ball late in the game? Why wasn't he at least cut loose on a couple plays?

- Does the number 23 ring a bell? I tell you, #23's all win championships and are MVP's of championships. I don't know how I looked over this while predicting my MVP...

- I hate the Colts.

The most important question leading into this game...

WHERE THE HECK ARE PAUL BIXBY'S DORRITOS!?!?!?!

They better be somewhere Paul, no superstitions should be broke just because it's a big game. Speaking of the big game, Ken Sothman's Official Chicago Bears Superbowl XLI Prediction:

Rex throws for 278 yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 interception.

Thomas Jones/Benson run for a combined 152 yards, 1 touchdwon.

The Golden Boy kicks for two field goals.

Meaning the 24 rule kicks in place...

Bears 27, Colts 24.

Your Super Bowl Champions the Chicago Bears, with Rex Grossman holding up the MVP trophy.

First, sorry Lisa. I didn't put together that it was you in the article. I wouldn't have left you out on purpose.

Kenneth, I had not at all realized exactly how young you are. I admit, I'm pretty young, but SuperBowl XX is within my conscious memory. I didn't realize it wasn't even in your lifetime. I might just cry.

Unfortunately , all my guests got scared off by the cold or tempted to stay home and play with a new HDTV (leaving me Bratwurst-less I might add). However, the HoneyBears, Mrs. Bixby (Not Her Real Name) and I are decked out in our Bears regalia and eagerly anticipated opening kickoff. We are currently taking a break from the wall-to-wall coverage by watching the Puppy Bowl's Kitty Half Time Show on Animal Planet. We are going to watch NFL Network's "America's Game: The SuperBowl Champions" episode featuring the 1985 Bears as the Number 2 best SuperBowl team (only number 2? They lost to the '72 Dolphins - I think a 17-0 season overshadowed the actual might of the '85 Bears).

Our anticipation is palpable, our trepidation understandable and our confidence nearly unshakable.

I hope you are enjoying your stay in rainy, but warm, Miami. We are freezing up here. Tom Skilling predicted a HIGH of -2 degrees today. He predicted that we would get up to a high of 1 tomorrow. That's right. O - N - E Degree.

It's so cold that beer I had in a cooler froze solid overnight. I had to bring it inside. Don't believe me? Here's photographic evidence.

The horizontal beer is a non-frozen beer there for reference. It also highlights the position I hope to see Peyton Manning in most of the evening, with the Frosty Beers representing the Frosty Bears defensive line. The one on the left is a bit thawed on the bottom (to show Alex Brown's quick feet?).

Two more jokes for you before the game too:

(I can't believe he's coming back next year!)

Quarterback Brett Farve, after living a full life, died.
When he got to heaven, God started showing him around. They came to a modest little house with a faded Packers flag in the window.
"This house is yours for eternity, Brett," said God. "This is very special; not everyone gets a house up here."
Brett felt special indeed and walked up to his house. On his way up to the porch, he noticed another house just around the corner. It was a three-story mansion with a blue and orange sidewalk, 50-foot tall flagpole with an enormous Bears logo flag on it, and in every window, a blue helmet with a "C" on it.
Brett looked at God and said, "God, I'm not trying to be ungrateful, but I have a question. I was an All-Pro Quarterback, I won a Super Bowl, and I even went to the Hall of Fame."
God said, "So what do you want to know, Brett?"
"Well, why does Walter Payton get a better house than me?"
God chuckled and said, "Brett, that's not Walter Payton's house, it's Mine."

A charity home-builder was doing a walk through with the buyer as construction was nearing completion. They were walking through the house confirming the paint colors for each room chosen by the new owner.

The new owner said the kitchen should be a light blue, he wrote it down and then opened the window and yelled "Green side up!"
They then walked to the living room and the owner asked for a faded yellow, the builder wrote it down and then opened the window and yelled "Green side up!"

They walked up stairs and after noting each bedroom color again the builder wrote it down and then opened the window and yelled "Green side up!"

Finally the new owner had to ask "Why do you keep yelling, 'Green side up?'"

The builder replied, "Just making sure things get done right. I have a crew of Colts players volunteering out there, and they are laying sod today."

There's a million more over at the Chicago Tribune.

Kenneth Sothman, Bears Superfan

I may not be in Miami, and I can't enjoy the presence not being in a five-foot radius of a Colts fan no matter where I go, so here's the bottled up emotions (in random order) from over the past two weeks:

- But before I get into anything, we should probably give our boy Rex a round of applause for throwing the New Years Eve game against the Packers on purpose so Brett Favre would return, thus putting the Packers in a good chance of not being in contention next year. Rex, I apologize for ever doubting you, especially since I'm convinced my blogs gave you this sneaky sneaky idea...

- First of all, having the Bears in the Superbowl for the first time in my life is a very odd feeling, it's as if this upcoming game is still just the regular season. I mean, are we sure the Bears are suppose to be playing in this important magnitude of a game? In February? Shouldn't I be preparing for spring training by now?

- I can't help but brag though, for the Bears/Saints game proved what I was saying when the media used complete lack of common sense when looking into the game. I love how three hours after the game Gene W. from espn.com was already pointing out how the weather had effected the Saints... (Really? He didn't see that coming at all?)

In fact, I'm 2 for 2 for the playoffs so far, for I completely nailed the Seahawks game, right down to Matt Hasselback's stat-line. Trust me Bears fan, this is a good thing for us.

- Going into this game, I can't help but love the fact that supposedly Manning had gotten the monkey off the back by defeating a depleted Patriots team that had no reason in being in the AFC Championship in the first place. Sure, the Colts made a nice comeback. But isn't it a bad thing the Colts were in that situation in the first place? What were they doing being down that many points at half? And not only that, but it took the worse half of Tom Brady's life, some very questionable officiating (Manning barely got touched on the "roughing the passer"), and Reche Caldwell dropping a complete wide-open pass, yet we were still a mis-communicated 5-yard slant from Troy Brown from considering Manning a choke artist. By the way, HE STILL HASN'T WON ANYTHING YET.

- Like I said on my radio show the other night here at Ball State, I would never bet on the Boston Red Sox during the post-season to win even though they've won a World Series. There's just a complete history that defies the logic of betting on them, so why would I do the same with Peyton?

By the way Indy fans, I have to throw this out there since I was at the Pacers/Lakers game last night, how did Reggie Miller do in his first game in the NBA Finals when he finally made it? Ooops, that's right, he finished with one of the worst shooting performances in finals history...

- And doesn't that scare Colts fans a bit that the Colts are celebrating about how Manning has released the pressure (besides the fact he's played incredibly poor during the playoffs as a whole) while the Bears are talking about how they don't get any respect? Honestly, who's the hungrier team right now?

- I'm happy for the fact Tank Johnson was allowed to go to Miami not only for the fact so he can help the Bears, but in fear of what could've happened if he was forced to miss the biggest game of his life. Though I will say, it's unfair how athletes get special treatment.

(Let's put it this way, if Marcus Riley had the same charges of possession that Tank Johnson had, would a judge allow him to cover the game for NBC down in a city full of parties, mojitos, strip clubs, and trouble around every corner? Something makes me doubt that...)

- If Rex Grossman only plays poorly in games in which he fails to prepare for, then shouldn't our boy come out firing tomorrow since he's had a two-week break? I mean, this is the same guy in which we were TOO WORRIED that he was focused too much on football during the first month of the season.

On a side note, Rex has a cousin that goes to Ball State, which I've never met her personally, but a friend of mine knows her and it sounds like Rex was more then ecstatic about this game. Trust me, he's going to be ready.

- Speaking of Rex, don't be surprised when he raises the SuperBowl MVP trophy above his head. Even if he were to have just an average game, I feel as if we all owe him one big group hug though. How could not a single one of us praise him for leading us here up to this point? He brought the Bears to the Super Bowl!!! That's been my boy since like 7th/8th grade, and he's taken us to the Super Bowl!!!!!!!!

- The Patriots put up 34 points on the Colts defense. Now for what reason shouldn't the Bears, who have just as good as a passing/receiving game, running game, and special teams, do the same? I've asked many Colts fans this during the past week, yet they can only tell me Rex will choke. Well, what if he doesn't?

- By the way, I've never seen so many people buy conference championship shirts such as Colts fans have. It's as if they knew this was the pinnacle for them...

On a side note, I on a personal level don't believe in buying these shirts until after the team's season is over. It just doesn't seem right settling for something small (a division championship, a conference championship) when something bigger is still out there (a world championship).

- Speaking of shirts, I can't believe ESPN.Com was already allowing people to pre-order the Super Bowl championship gear for their teams. I would never, and I mean never, get over how I jinxed my team by buying this stuff a week in advance.

- Trust me when I say this, because I've watched all the Colts games this season. They have not met a team this season that's as aggressive on defense as the Bears are when they play "Lovie-Ball!". Both Harrison and Wayne are soft receivers who like to fall to the ground and run out of bounds rather then taking the hit. That won't happen with the speed of this defense, and when they do get hit, heads and footballs will roll.

And I completely hate the fact that Joe Buck and Troy Aikman completely failed to bring up the fact how the Bears have played this style of play of strip the ball, pick it up, and head towards the end zone all season long. It's really unfair we only got one Pat Summerall game the whole year!

- Sportscenter just showed Alysa Milano wearing a "I love the Colts" shirt. Now for what reason is Milano a Colts fan? Is she even from anywhere in Indiana? I bring this up because the other day I had a shouting match in my personal finance class from a kid, we'll just call him Mr. Smart Colts fan, who claimed that Bears fans were all bandwagon fans, and that the team finished with an 8-8 record last year.

After I corrected him, I obviously pointed out how the Colts have the smallest fan base in the three major sports, and that most Colts fans have both a lack of knowlegde of their own team and of the NFL as a whole. Mr. Smart Colts fan then followed that up by telling me the Bears only have fans because Chicago is the biggest city in America.

Now I admit, I'm just as biased against Colts fans as I am Cubs fans, but I do respect the fact that they have the right to be so happy their team is in the playoffs. I'd probably be at ease alot more if I wasn't 40 minutes away from Indy...

- Just a reminder, I hope you've all enjoyed the complete Bears coverage in Chicago that it seems you guys have received. Because here, the Colts have already won the Superbowl according to the media. I'm scared to death of what Monday could be like if the Bears were to lose...

Now can you guys understand why I seem so bitter though? If I was 40 minutes from Chicago instead, I may just be the happiest person in the world right now! Instead, I'm only number four in that category.

A quick random side note, on Monday night I anchor sports for "NewsWatch", a student-run news broadcast that shows througout Delaware county. Can you guys even imagine how much it would devestate me to talk about the Colts winning the Superbowl while acting like I'm happy for it? It'd be torture I tell you, pure torture.

- I will admit though, during the past week whenever my chemistry class (full of about 150-200 people I would guess) got quiet, I'd let out a nice "BEARS!" yell to keep everyone on their toes. Ok, so I've played the role of the obnoxious Bears fan this week also...

- With everything I've said, I can't help but say I'm a complete nervous wreck when it comes to this game. I feel so confident that the Bears can win, I'm so scared they could lose, and I'm so dissapointed that no matter what happens, the greatest Chicago Bears season I've ever seen ends tomorrow.

- Since I'm keeping my playoff superstitions alive (two posts a week, one the night before a game, one the day of, no jinxing anything in the middle) my official Chicago Bears Superbowl prediction comes tomorrow.

And just as I typed that, I just got goosebumps.

Hangin' In Miami

Marcus Riley, NBC5 Street Team (video)

As I've said on this blog ad nauseum, I couldn't have dreamed for a better Super Bowl. The two teams that I have the most invested in, will meet tomorrow for all the marbles.

I've been here in Miami since Wednesday, covering the Miami party scene for on our Street Team blog. I know, tough gig.

My daytime workspace has been in the media center, located in the Miami Convention Center in South Beach. In short, it's a feast for the eyes and senses, and an incredible experience for any sports fan.

Frankly, it's tough to get anything done, because there's so much going on around you. At one point I looked around, and within my line of sight was Joe Montana, Joe Namath, Don Shula, and boxers Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Oscar de la Hoya jawing at each other. Then there's the oddball stuff, like a Howard Cosell impersonator doing interviews, or the Burger King man and Drew Rosenhaus making the interview rounds with various radio stations. Amazing stuff, and something I don't take for granted.

It's interesting to listen to the various reporters from all over the world break down Sunday's matchup from every vantage point imaginable. There's no question, the time is over for talking, and we're all itching for kickoff.

I've also mentioned -- ad nauseum -- that I'm rooting for the Colts. What worries me is that very few of the so-called experts around me are giving the Bears a chance. We've all seen what the Bears tend to do when they're underestimated.

Then again sometimes -- or most of the times actually -- what's supposed to happen, happens.

One short day until the big game! Who else has enjoyed all of this coverage. It is so much fun watching the news in the morning to get ready and go to work because of all of the Bears stories and coverage!

So unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your thinking) I will not be in Miami for the Big game, but I will be with our Bears in spirit. As will all of Chicago, most certainly.

What does everyone think about the whole Peyton Manning No-huddle, straight-to-the-line-of-scrimmage way of playing. I feel like it is all I am hearing about from the media these days.... "How will the Bears keep up?"

Also, Paul: Glad to hear "Mrs. Bixby" is also a superfan (an elite club, I know)-- and thanks for mentioning the article-- but you missed Lisa! She was featured in there too.

Bear down, Chicago!

Two of our very own Superfanbloggers, Sue Rhein and Eileen Firstenberger, are featured in a Sun-Times article today. Check it out. They are repping for all the lady Bears superfans out there. My lovely wife Mrs. Bixby (Not Her Real Name) is a proud member of your mighty throng! I wish they had mentioned our blog in the article though. It would be nice if readers could get turned onto the blog, late in the season though it may be. Next year maybe.

I tell you, the buildup to the SuperBowl this week has me all atwitter and sitting on the edge of my seat! I have had no less than three SuperBowl related dreams this week, which is odd because I almost never dream. They were weird dreams though. In two of them, the Bears lost and in the last one, the Bears didn't even beat the Saints and I was attending a Colts-Saints SuperBowl (the Colts won 71-41. by the way). I chalk it all up to my anxiety facing the Colts. I'm fairly confident the Bears will win, but the uncertainty is brutal.

I am a little concerned about Peanut (or Chuckie Tills as the BearsCast guys call him covering Marvin Harrison. All it takes is Peanut slipping once, and it's a huge play. Peanut is a top-notch coverage guy, but the Cover-2 (Lovie-2?) defense opens holes that allow the occasional big play, and I think the front four will lock down the Colts run game so tight that Peyton won't have much choice but to throw.

I look forward to watching the Jones-Benson tag team destroy the recently-vaunted Colts pass rush. I don't think they know what they are in for.

Let's cross our fingers too for "Devine" Hester to really light the Colts Special Team up!

I just can't wait! I'll have my beverage of choice, my Doritos (aka, triangular flakes of cheese-covered luck), my Bears shirt I have worn for 17 straight games, my Honey Bears, my darling wife Mrs. Bixby (Not Her Real Name) and my dad and sister. It's gonna be a loud time in the old home tonight - er, Sunday night!

GO BEARS!

Gail, Bears Superfan

This week has been great with all the Bears coverage everywhere you look. It's been fun watching all the interviews and reading all the stories about the players. Really cool car, Thomas. Love the color. It's easy to tell you're a Leo. I've been so mesmerized with the coverage I haven't given much thought to blogging. Sorry!

I didn't get any tickets in the lottery. One of my friends did and is going. Another friend bought the plane ticket but hadn't much success with a game ticket when I spoke to him last week. That might have changed by now. Looking at all the activities makes you really want to go for broke and do it up right by being down there the entire week.

Does anyone have big plans for watching the game? Or are any of you hosting a party? I know we had better buy Doritos soon if we plan to have any for the game.

GO BEARS!
