Bears Business I

Welcome to the first edition of "Bears Business," a weekly look at the Chicago Bears brought to you by two of our NBC5 interns, Lindsay Mufich and Danielle Barrera, and seen only here on the Bears Superfan Blog. Seeing as the whole point of internships is to get real-world experience, I thought this would be a good chance to give these young ladies a different forum to practice their craft. I encourage our bloggers and the rest of our audience to critique their performance in the comments section -- both positively and negatively. I've already cautioned them both on their use of the words "we" and "us." Sports journalists need to be objective about the teams they cover. Keep in mind that Lindsay is a sports intern with a pretty good knowledge of football, and Danielle is our Web intern who is about two weeks into her football education. Please enjoy the first edition of "Bears Business."

A decent start, but I'm also a little nit-picky, so here's a few things I think you girls could do that would make it look alot better right off the bat...

- You girls are interns at NBC 5! I have to believe that with this you guys have legal access (I know when I shoot mine I won't be able to, which absolutely breaks my heart) to an amazing amount of Bears B-Roll that could be put over you girls talking. As cute as you girls are, video is a must, because straight looking at just two people talking can lose the interest of the viewers fast.

- I'd definitely make the switch to wireless mics. Fast.

- Stats, stats, stats. Stats in sports back up arguments, and I'm not really sure if you girls mentioned any.

- I'd change up your "studio" a little bit, but if you really wanted to knock this out of the ballpark, take it on location to Soldier Field. Trust me, even if you were just in the parking lot, as long as the stadium is behind you, it would look about ten times cooler then the random Brian Urlacher stand-up in the background.

- Graphics for your girls names would make it look a more professional.

- As Marcus pointed out, and something I know myself still has problems with, we aren't actually part of the team. They may tell us that we're the 12th man, but we won't receive a ring when they win the SuperBowl, so the "we" has to go.

So like I said, you girls had a good start, but once you start implementing some of these things, good will become great. Looking forward to seeing you girls next week!

I thought the first edition of Bears Business was good. I don't agree with the back drop of Soldier Field. It seems like half the reporters do that. Yesterday Joe Theismann and the other two fellows had a similar set-up. The three were sitting with the background just saying "Monday Night Football", and they were using old fashioned mics. Lindsay's voice just faded at times, and it would be better without the papers. But both Lindsay and Danielle seemed relaxed in front of the camera. It was a good start.

Maybe I was a little overboard with shooting it in front of Soldier, but still, how cool would it have been for these girls to have their first "Bears Business" shot on the eve of a Monday Night Football game with all the fans tailgating behind them? I guess they'll have the playoff games to do this for, but still, it would've been pretty sweet.

I just think if BSU was 10-15 minutes from Soldier, I'd include the stadium in there every possible chance. I imagine my stand-up sounding something like...

"The Ball State Field hockey team resumes MAC-play this weekend at Central Michigan. For I'm Ken Sothman at Soldier Field, Cardinal Sports Live..."

In addition to the points above - I would also like to suggest - Intermingle some of the blogers information/dialog with your broadcast. This might help fuel the discussion...
