Eileen Firstenberger, Bears Super Fan
Eileen Firstenberger, Bears Super Fan

Ok, so I have tried reeeeally hard to let go of my reservations regarding Cedric Benson. I am the first to admit to my own biases. But-- as a Bears fan, I believe that every drafted player (or otherwise NFL-bound player, or human in general) should jump at the opportunity to just PLAY for us. They should, naturally, put money and pride and all else aside for that esteemed privilege. So, to witness Cedric hold out on his contract last season obviously rubbed me the wrong way.

My lingering resentment towards him for this (not small!) transgression was not immediately assuaged... because, guess what? He got injured right away! I had no time to reevaluate my initial misgivings. Because, frankly, what need have we for the most expensive variety of delicate flower of a running back that there is out there? I mean, c'mon, we have TJ consistently running 100+ yard games.

And then... lo and behold, last week: Cedric stepped up to the plate (er, or onto the field as it were), and scored not one but TWO touchdowns!! TWO, people! I'll grant that the difference between 40 and 26 points (I'll concede and attribute the Gould Standard's ensuing two extra points in part to Cedric's running efforts) is a great difference, but maybe those points don't weigh in quite so heavily when the defense is paving and maintaining the path for a serious SHUTOUT. I mean BIG SHUTOUT NUMBER TWO. A shutout which will seal the deal for the fifth win, maintain the Bears' perfect season and make everyone and their brothers climb onto the already overflowing bandwagon.

But, then... all of a sudden those 14 pts don't resonate as much as they could have done because Griese and Cedric can't handle a simple hand-off-and-run-the-ball-a-few-measly-yards play to keep the game going as a nice tidy (immaculate!) shutout until the clock runs to zero and their fumbling efforts lead to the ensuing touchdown.

So, in short, I am in agreement with Kathee, we should have had that shutout. Our defense deserved it (did anyone else see how angry Urlacher was on the after said touchdown?). And it was really extra hard to watch the Bills enter Bears' territory after the two minute warning.

But I'll still be happy (thrilled! exhilarated!) to take our fifth win :)

Who's ready for some Monday Night Football?

Bear down, Chicago Bears. Make every play clear the way to victory!
